3 DAYS WITHOUT WATER
Water & Purification
The human body can survive roughly 3 days without water. Finding, filtering, and purifying water is a non-negotiable survival skill.

Finding Water
Water flows downhill — follow terrain to low points, valleys, and ravines. Look for green vegetation, animal tracks converging on a path, and insect swarms — all signs of nearby water. In the morning, collect dew from grass and leaves by dragging an absorbent cloth through vegetation and wringing it out. Listen for running water — even a trickle can be collected over time. Avoid stagnant water with no visible flow, heavy algae, or chemical smells when better sources are available.
Boiling
Boiling is the most reliable field purification method. Bring water to a rolling boil for at least 1 minute at elevations below 6,500 feet. Above 6,500 feet, boil for 3 minutes — lower air pressure means water boils at a lower temperature, requiring more time to kill pathogens. Let the water cool before drinking. If you do not have a metal container, you can boil water in a plastic bottle by filling it completely and placing it near (not in) flames, or use hot rocks dropped into a container of water.
Filtration
The Sawyer Mini is one of the most trusted field filters — it removes 99.99999% of bacteria and 99.9999% of protozoa with a 0.1-micron hollow fiber membrane. It filters up to 100,000 gallons and weighs just 2 ounces. Important: no portable filter removes viruses — in areas where viral contamination is a concern (flood zones, areas with human waste), combine filtration with chemical treatment or boiling. Always filter before chemically treating for best results.
Purification Tablets
Iodine and chlorine dioxide tablets are lightweight backup purification methods. Follow the package instructions for wait times — typically 30 minutes for iodine and up to 4 hours for chlorine dioxide (depending on water temperature and clarity). Cold or murky water requires longer treatment times. Iodine tablets have a taste that can be masked with vitamin C powder added after the treatment period. Chlorine dioxide (e.g., Aquamira, Katadyn Micropur) is tasteless and effective against a broader range of pathogens.
Dehydration Warning Signs
Dehydration kills — learn to recognize the signs early. Dark yellow or amber urine is the first warning. As dehydration progresses: dizziness and lightheadedness, dry mouth and cracked lips, confusion and irritability, rapid heartbeat, sunken eyes, and inability to produce tears or sweat. In a survival situation, drink water before you feel thirsty — by the time you are thirsty, you are already mildly dehydrated. Ration sweat, not water — rest in shade during the heat of the day and move during cooler hours.
